Kobe Hankyu is a major department store in Kobe’s Sannomiya district which has two buildings: the Main Building, which is also called the “Honkan” – and an annex called the New Building or “Shinkan”. In this article we will introduce the main points of interest in the New Building.
The New Building has nine floors above ground and one basement level and it is connected to the Main Building by passageways at the B1 basement level and the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th floors. This building is notable for having branches of Muji and Loft as well as Blue Bottle Coffee.
The basement level of the New Building is devoted to daily groceries such as fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish. This level is also connected directly to the basement of the Main Building where you can find luxury foods such as confectionery, alcohol, baked goods and a delicatessen.
The famous American coffee roaster and retailer Blue Bottle Coffee has café on the 1st floor. Here you can recharge with hand-dripped coffee, sandwiches and ice cream. There is also a coffee stand outside the building – open from 8.00 a.m. – where you can order takeaway coffee.
There is a mix of boutique stores on the 2nd floor which includes fashion, shoes and bags for ladies in MM6 Maison Margiela; fashion for both ladies and men in Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Dsquared 2 and Marni; and a perfume boutique called Nose Shop.
The 3rd floor also has a mix of boutiques which includes fashion, shoes and bags for ladies in the Vivienne Westwood Red Label boutique; men’s and ladies’ fashion in Calvin Klein; shoes for ladies and men in Worm Kobe; and interior goods and furniture in the Conran Shop.
The 4th floor is occupied by a branch of the lifestyle store Loft. Here you can find all kinds of everyday goods such as stationery, interior goods, health products, character goods, wristwatches and glasses.
Both the 5th and 6th floors are occupied by Muji. On the 5th floor you can find food, kitchenware, laundry and cleaning supplies, stationery and health & beauty products.
On the 6th floor you can find Muji bedding, furniture and clothing for men, women and children.
The remaining floors are taken up with bedding, furniture, jewelry and watches on the 7th floor; towels and bathroom goods on the 8th floor; and Paris Miki eyeglasses on the 9th floor.
